Town of Danby Zoning Update

Good Afternoon,

The Town of Danby Planning Group’s Conservation Working Group will be meeting again on Friday 4-16-21 at 7pm.

Thank you to everyone who completed the survey about Hamlet Working Group Meetings – the day that worked from the most people (and didn’t work for the least people) is Friday. I will be scheduling the year’s work of meetings on the Town’s web calendar later today: TownofDanbyNY.org/calendar

Welcome to all the new people who have been added to this list in the last week, it’s great to have your participation!

We will continue discussion about the new zones that will be created from what is currently the Low Density Residential Zone on Friday. In the last meeting we honed in on a few options which I have worked to flesh out with some GIS work over the last week.

The slides that document discussion we had last time can be found here:  https://towndanby.digitaltowpath.org:10768/content/Generic/View/12:field=documents;/content/Documents/File/1258.pdf

A working map that shows a start to which parcels could be in the Neighborhood Zone and some parcels that would be in a High Priority Conservation Zone as well as some criteria and questions for other zones can be found here: https://towndanby.digitaltowpath.org:10768/content/Generic/View/12:field=documents;/content/Documents/File/1257.pdf

A google doc spreadsheet for the proposed zones where anyone can add comments and ideas is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_cXHXsJKuN-jGSRvzWmXhRMK2Z8hlLvHQ4tBZZqtkkg/edit?usp=sharing

As you review these documents it is important to understand that we’re in very early stages and this is all being shaped in the Conservation Working Groups meetings so if you have thoughts please share them, we’re working through this as a community and I expect it will evolve significantly. As frequently happens as I’ve moved from our conversation to the reality of parcels on the ground things don’t always break down cleanly in the way that theoretical discussion anticipated, so we have plenty to discuss. The goal for April is to have the names and purposes of the future zones worked out to guide us moving forward, luckily we’re ahead of schedule so we have this time to further consider what zones there should be using this additional information.

Sincerely,

David West, LEED AP

The Town of Danby sits on the traditional & ancestral land of the Gayogoho:no’ (Cayuga Nation), one of the five nations to first form the Haudenosaunee. Indigenous peoples were largely forced out of Upstate New York by the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition in 1779. The land that would become the Town of Danby was a part of the Watkins and Flint Purchase, a 336,380 acre patent granted by New York State to numerous eastern investors in 1794.
