About Dog Licenses in Danby
Town of Danby Town Law #1 of 2011 requires that all dogs living in Danby for more than 30 days be licensed through the Town Clerk’s office.
The purpose of this Local Law is to provide for the licensing and identification of dogs, the control and protection of the dog population, and the protection of persons, property, and other animals from dog attack damage.
Dog licenses must be renewed annually. The license expires one year after it is issued at the end of the month. For example, a license issued Aug. 18, 2024 will need to be renewed by Aug. 31, 2025. A dog license is not issued/renewed until payment is received.
Licensed dogs are given a silver collar tag with an ID number. This ID number is needed for online renewals and can be found by contacting the Clerk’s Office.
Dog License Requirements
All dogs are required to have an up-to-date rabies vaccination at the time of licensing.
This applies to both new licenses and renewal licenses. If your dog’s rabies vaccine is up-to-date at the time of renewal, we do not need to see proof of rabies vaccination to process the renewal.
Proof of spay/neuter procedure is also required for spayed/neutered dogs. This only needs to be shown once, either upon original issue of the license or renewal of the license post-procedure.

Fees
$24 per unaltered dog
$12 per spayed/neutered dog
A portion of the fee goes to NY State Ag & Markets Animal Population Control.

Note: New dog licenses require proof of rabies vaccination.
To license a dog (or dogs) for the first time, we will need the following information.
- Proof of current rabies vaccination
- Proof of spay/neuter procedure (if any)
- Owner’s name and address
- Owner’s phone number and/or email
- Dog’s name, breed, and color
- Microchip information (if any)
- Veterinarian name (if any)
By Mail (Check Only)
To license your dog through mail, please fill in this form with the above information and a check made out to Danby Town Clerk in the amount required ($12 per spayed/neutered dog; $24 per unaltered dog) to:

If there are any issues with processing your dog’s license, we will contact you based on the information provided. Upon successful processing of your license, your dog license and a collar tag with your dog’s ID number will be sent in the mail.
In Person (Cash, Check, or Card)
To license your dog in person, please visit the Town Clerk’s Office at 1830 Danby Road, Ithaca NY 14850. We are open Monday-Friday 11am-4pm. Please bring proof of rabies and spay/neuter procedure (if applicable). The fee can be paid in cash, check, or card.
Upon successful processing your license, you will receive your dog license and a collar tag with your dog’s ID number.
Online (Card Only)
To license your dog online, please fill out the form linked here.
After submitting the form, we will email a payment link to you, at which point you will be able to pay for the license. A dog license is not issued until payment is received.

After submitting the form, if we do not have an updated rabies vaccine on file, we will contact you to request proof of an up-to-date rabies vaccination. After we have proof of the vaccination, we will email a payment link to you, at which point you will be able to pay for the license renewal. The license is not legally renewed until payment is received.
Upon successful renewal of your license, you will receive your renewed dog license in the mail.
After receiving the payment link emailed by the Town Clerk Office, you can renew online and pay by credit card.
- Select “Dog License” from the drop-down menu, then click the “Next” button.
- Enter your name, dog license number (e.g., 1422 Spot), and comments (e.g., new license for Spot)
- In the amount to pay field, enter $12 for a spayed/neutered dog; $24 for an unaltered dog.
- Click Next.
- Review the “items to be paid” summary page
- If all is OK, click “Proceed to checkout”
- At checkout, you will enter the payment card details as required.
- Please make sure to check any acknowledgment boxes and verification codes upon checkout.
- Click the green Pay button.
