(Ithaca, N.Y., February 23, 2025) – Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is alerting the customers of the West Danby Water District that the Boil Water Order issued Thursday February 20th has been lifted, effective Sunday, February 23, 10:00 AM. It is no longer necessary for customers to boil their tap water or to use bottled water for drinking or cooking. The tap water is now safe to use.
Water district officials in West Danby worked closely with TCWH to repair the leak and restore adequate pressure to the water distribution system. Chlorination has been restored, and multiple rounds of water testing have been conducted to ensure safe drinking water for customers. The leak in the water system was found and repaired on Thursday evening and testing for bacteria occurred Friday and Saturday. The completed tests demonstrated an absence of coliform bacteria in the distribution system, allowing the boil water order to be lifted.
Customers who may have consumed the impacted water without first bringing it to a rolling boil during the Boil Water Order period are advised to continue to monitor for symptoms of illness. Harmful bacteria in drinking water may cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. Additional risk is possible for infants, elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. If you experience any of these symptoms and they continue or worsen, contact your healthcare provider for assistance.

2/21/2025 UPDATE: As of Thursday evening, the leak has been fixed and water service has been restored to the West Danby Water District. HOWEVER, until testing shows the water is safe, water must still be boiled before use! Please continue to boil your water until further notice!
Bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute, and cool before using.
Or use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food until further notice.
This Boil Water Notice applies to all customers of The West Danby Water District
What Happened?
At approximately 8pm on February 19th, 2025 the water system lost pressure. When water mains lose pressure, it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes can enter your water.
Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. But these symptoms are not just caused by microbes in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you should seek medical advice.
What is being done?
Water District Officials are working closely with contractors and the Tompkins County Health Department to contain any leaks, restore pressure and test to confirm safe drinking water for customers.
You will need to boil water until further notice. You will be informed when tests show that you no longer need to boil your water. Bottled water will be provided, if needed, to any customer of the water district. Arrangements can be made to have it delivered to you by calling or texting the District Clerk, Marrell Cortright at 607-319-6166.
